Comparing Pastors' Predictions And Election Outcome

Nigerians waited for the outcome of this presidential election with excitement, hope and even fear. Not only did the analysts provide their forecasts, but also famous clerics. After the announcement of the official results, let’s see who came closest in the prediction.

It officially emerged on April 1 that Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress candidate, became the president-elect. Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent on the victory.

Some pastors could foresee such an outcome:

1. At least 6,000 pastors from various in the Southwest mobilised for the emergence of Buhari as president. They said that they were acting by “divine instruction” from God who told them that Buhari would be the next leader of Nigeria. Pastors For Change even declared a 7-day session of praying and fasting for God to grant him victory.

2. Lagos prophet Paul Okikijesu was not quite clear with his prediction, but said correctly that Buhari might be voted for. Exactly what he said was:

“If it is Buhari that believes that I am alive and surrender his heart to Me, he will win the election. Nevertheless despite people’s mandate they will neither release power to him nor swear him in as the president of the nation. His situation will be similar to Abiola that had people’s mandate, but was not given the chance to rule the country.”

It is not known whether the APC candidate “surrendered his heart” to the cleric, but as for now, he has been declared the winner. As far as the power claim is concerned, the inauguration is yet to be held on May 29, thus no final conclusion should be made now.

He also said:

“If the APC is not careful and does not increase its efforts in Lagos state, PDP will win the state.”

As a result, the APC polled 792,460, while the PDP received 632,327.

Interestingly all the predictions came with the safe “if” word (like “if” the APC doesn’t try hard in that state, they will lose). Thus it’s hard to interpret this prediction.

Moreover, the prophet spoke about Jonathan:

“If he believes fully that all power belongs to Me and nobody has power except God then he will win the presidential election… Jonathan will only rule for one year after his swearing-in-ceremony.”

Many more predicted victory for President Jonathan

1. The spiritual leader of One Love Family, Sat Guru Maharaji, stated categorically:

“There is no vacancy for Buhari at Aso Rock. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is the verifiable divine choice of the forthcoming presidential election.”

2. Micheal Olubode, aka Micadeolu, the prophet of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) was also sure of GEJ’s victory:

“I want to let the people of Nigeria know that The Lord will return His Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to his presidential seat.”

3. Brother Joshua Iginla, the General Overseer of the Abuja-based Champions Royal Assembly, shared a similar vision:

“It is not because Jonathan is the perfect man but I think the unity of Nigeria is most important. I thank God for the opposition party because they are going to do well but they are not the dream party that God will raise to take the ‘baton’ from PDP.”

4. Apostle B.B. Frederick, a pastor from Ghana, declared based on his “inspiration of the Almighty that President Jonathan is the set man for Nigeria. His next term on the seat will bring liberation to Nigeria”.

Some clergymen said that none of the two candidates would win; others provided unclear prophecies

1. Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, was secretive:

“Unfortunately, because it is election year, I can’t tell you all that God told me about Nigeria. But I will tell you this: by the end of the year, many will say ‘all is well that ends well.’”

2. Godfrey Gbujie, the prophet who had predicted the deaths of former military ruler Gen Sani Abacha and former president Shehu Yar’Adua, told newsmen in Owerri that neither GEJ nor GMB would win in 2015.

Moreover, he added: “Buhari has a mission divinely imposed on him, but he shall not rule this country again; even if he wins, God has not determined him to find His favour. Jonathan is the last elected president of this country.”

It is worth noting, however, that the final comment on whether General Buhari will successfully take his seat in Aso Rock can be made only after the inauguration ceremony on May 29. Hopefully, Nigeria will have a peaceful and violence-free transition after the officially-announced victory for Buhari.
