Yesterday history was made when the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan called his opponent, the president elect, Rtd. Gen. Muhammad Buhari, to congratulate him as the winner of the 2015 presidential election even before the official overall result was announced.
This came as a shock to many Nigerians considering the fact that President Jonathan not only lost to Buhari but made history because it is almost unheard of in African politics for the incumbent to accept defeat in a political contest.
The internet was awash with various memes mocking President Jonathan and his wife. Some even went ahead to make a mockery of how the two of them will go back to Otuoke (Jonathan’s hometown) after they have been yanked out of Aso Rock. Some memes also made a mockery of how Jonathan was begging former president Olusegun Obasanjo and among many others.
Surprisingly, when news reached everyone that President Goodluck Jonathan had put a phone call through to his opponent even while everyone was still waiting for the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to air the votes of the last state which was collated (Borno), everyone marvelled. The atmosphere changed as a lot of young Nigerians who had been mocking the president and his wife because of the defeat started praising him for his spirit of statesmanship. Below are some of the reactions of people when President Jonathan called Buhari conceding defeat.
