Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, reportedly plans to establish special anti-corruption courts to deal with tax evasion cases and official graft.
National Mirror gathered that the court would be set up in the Federal Capital Territory and would consider specific cases, including tax evasion offences by companies, individuals and government officials.
Senator Aloysius Etok, the chairman of the Anti Money Laundering And Cyber Security Coalition, disclosed this information on May 13, Wednesday, at the National Assembly. He said that a group of senators and reps had already got the nod from Buhari.
It is expected that the newly established courts would enable more effective battle with such cases.
“We are confident that these courts will give accelerated hearing to tax evasion cases and other cases bothering on corruption.”
It should be noted that fighting corruption was announced as one of the main priorities of the incoming administration.
It looks like the president-elect has already started considering the ways. Still, the power transition is to be held on May 29. This date will become the official starting point of evaluating Buhari’s performance as Nigeria’s president.
