The transition monitoring group has asked incoming-president, Muhammudu Buhari, to ensure a total overhaul of the anti-corruption agencies, especially the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The group says doing this will restore Nigerians lost confidence in the agencies to prosecute and fight against corruption in the country.
According to Daily Trust, the group’s chairman, comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said this while presenting the findings of the ‘TMG’s maiden governance survey’, on the expectations of Nigerians on the Buhari administration.
Speaking in Abuja today, the chairman said that the EFCC currently had little or no value in the evaluation of Nigerians and the society, hence the need for its leadership and operations to be completely overhauled.
He said: “All we see is that the more the money that is given to the EFCC, the more corruption we see in Nigeria. So, as far as we are concerned we are calling for the incoming administration to overhaul the EFCC. In fact from beginning to the end, there should be a serious cleaning of the EFCC, we need people with sound mind, people that are intelligent, people that are courageous, people with the will, people that are ready to put their lives on the line to do the needful to make sure that Nigeria is rid of corruption.
“These are the people that can change Nigeria to the promise land, because any system that encourages corruption is doom. So, what we have here today as EFCC is more or less political structure that government of the day determines that area to go. We want a new leadership in EFCC. Not only that, they (EFCC) must be put in front line charge, so that, issue of money will not be problem in tackling corruption in this country. But those that we are putting there must also be examined to know that they are not corrupt,” Zikirullahi said.
Buhari himself has been critical of the EFCC operation under President Goodluck Jonathan. Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the president-elect called on Jonathan to call to order security agencies, who were straying from the proper cause according to the peace pact signed by both men.
