Jonathan Set To Remove His Cabinet May 20

As President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is set to vacate office, Jonathan is set to remove his cabinet tomorrow, May 20.

A source told Daily Trust that Jonathan will dissolve the cabinet after a farewell session planned to be held inside the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, May 20.

The insider also revealed that Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting would be the last in the life of the present government.

He said Jonathan will use the chance to thank his ministers and ask for prayers for Nigeria.

At the valedictory council session, prayers would also be proposed for the incoming administration of the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

All cabinet members have already received letters from Jonathan thanking them for serving their fatherland.

A minister from the southwest said Jonathan stressed in the letters that Wednesday’s council meeting would be the last to be held under his stewardship.

He further revealed that in obedience to a directive from Jonathan, all ministers were expected to hand over the activities of their ministries to their respective permanent secretaries by Thursday, May 21.

The minister, who asked not to be named, added that there would also be farewell ceremonies for ministers.

He said: “I can confirm to you that this Wednesday will mark the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to be presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. That is when Mr President will dissolve the cabinet.

“This is not catching us unawares. All of us have been duly informed. Mr President has sent letters to all of us who are his ministers. Mr President thanked us for having served the country meritoriously well together with him within the last few years.”

Senator Patricia Akwashiki, the minister of information, told State House reporters after the April 15 FEC meeting that the last council meeting under the incumbent president would be held on May 20 (tomorrow).

President Jonathan, who lost the March 28 presidential poll to Muhammadu Buhari, is scheduled to hand over the affairs of the country to Buhari on May 29.
