Controversial AIG For Lagos And Ogun States, Joseph Mbu Makes U-turn
The assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun states, Joseph Mbu, has denied the accusation that he supported one political party against another during the 2015 general elections.
Mbu who spoke during an occasion organised by Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island in Lagos, on Tuesday night, said while the supporters of the PDP were accusing him of supporting the APC, members of the APC were equally accusing him of supporting the PDP.
Mbu swore that his command is prepared to testify at the election tribunal to defend all that happened during the general elections.
Mbu was honoured with a Hall of Fame award bestowed on him by CRAN for conducting violence-free elections in Ogun and Lagos states.
He said that some individuals and political parties had accused the police of aiding their opponents to win the general elections, stressing that commands under his watch never did so.
“We conducted elections in Lagos, the best of its kind; I thanked all my commissioners, area commanders, DPOs, senior and junior officers for an excellent job; I wrote to them to say thank you.
“After the elections, nobody, not even APC or PDP called us to say thank you. They are still accusing us of bias. APC says we supported PDP and PDP says we supported APC, but we are ready to testify that we conducted the best elections in Lagos. If there was any conspiracy, any stealing of voters’ papers, it is between them and their polling agents, not the police. We did very well,’’ Mbu said.
Major Babatunde Panox (rtd), the senior special adviser (SSA) on security representing the Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola, described the award as most commendable.
He said Fashola has urged Mbu to put in more effort, particularly as they prepare for the inauguration of a new government.
The chairman of CRAN, Christopher Oji said Mbu was being honoured for exhibiting professionalism during the elections, contrary to negative beliefs by many concerning his personality. Oji said many people believed that Mbu was posted to zone 2 to carry out the agenda of some highly placed individuals during the elections, noting that the outcome of it all prove critics wrong.
