Major General Bamidele Ogunkale, the commandant of Nigeria Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) in Makurdi, has apologized to Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue state, for soldiers’ attack on a community on August 15, 2015.
The nation reports that Ogunkale made the apology during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Peoples House in Makurdi, on Wednesday, August 19.
The commandant said that he had already instituted a commission of inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to the incidence. He also assured the governor that perpetrators would be brought to book and punished.
Ogunkale added that the army would collaborate with other security agencies to prevent the reoccurrence of such ugly incident in the state.
During his visit, the commandant announced that the Nigerian Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies would not be relocated and called on the people to patronize the institution. Ogunkale requested the state government to provide logistics to the school to enable it resume pumping of water to the neighboring community.

Ortom, in his turn, said that the state government was compiling a comprehensive report on the crises and would forward it to President Muhammadu Buhari for necessary action.
However, the governor praised the commandant for his peace building efforts and appealed for its sustainability. He also assured that even though things were tight financially he would provide the assistance which the commandant requested.
It would be recalled that 39 soldiers from the NASME attacked a community in the Benue state capital over a lady married to a community member. The soldiers laid siege on the community in the north bank area of Makurdi, where they vandalised vehicles, stole mobile phones, TV sets, radio and other belongings of the residents.
