The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Degema local government area of Rivers state, Tonye Tyger and his aides were attacked by suspected armed robbers at the weekend.
One of the aides identified as Samuel Dappa was killed by the gunmen while Tyger and four others sustained injuries, Leadership reports.
Confirming the incident, press secretary to the PDP chairman, Jumbo Eferebo, who was one of those attacked said the incident occurred near the Polo Club along Tombia Street, at the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt, the state capital.
According to him, they had just withdrawn money from the GT Bank at GRA Junction, along Aba Road and were just approaching the Polo Club when the unknown gunmen who were pursuing our vehicle, opened fire on them.
“One of us, Samuel Dappa, from Isokun community was hit by bullets while the bullet pierced through my back,” he said.
The press secretary disclosed that Tyger suffered dislocation and bruises while others sustained various injuries and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Eferebo added that the gunmen carted away N5 million meant for an empowerment programme in the local government area which they had withdrawn from the bank.
Recall that in early September, gunmen numbering about 20 had attacked the chairman of the Kogi state chapter of the PDP, Sam Uhuotu on the Abuja-Lokoja road. They had robbed him off his valuables, official files and money.
