Okada ban in Ika N-East ‘ll render 2,000 jobless— Monarchs

THE proposed ban of commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State with effect from September, in addition to other areas where the ban is operational has generated a lot of concern.

Royal fathers in the area, led by Obi of Owa Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Efeizomor, have sent an SOS to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on the matter.

They said: “Over 2,000 use commercial motorcycle and all that is associated with its operation to take care of themselves and family members.
“The ban within Ika North-East with effect from September 1, will send many families on exile as they will not be able to survive, which may also increase insecurity in the area.”

However, in his reaction, state Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Ben Ibakpa, told Chat212 on phone yesterday, “there is no going back on the ban.
“The state government takes the issue of security very seriously. It is when the lives and property are secured that you talk about infrastructure.
“Enforcement of the ban begins September 1. We are not compromising security which is the main reason for the ban.”
