The Abia State Police Command has arrested 6 staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia State after the discovery of so many permanent voters’ card, (PVC), in the house of a criminal suspect in Isiala Ngwa South local government in the state.
A reliable source from INEC state office in Umuahia confirmed the arrest and told Vanguard that they were at the Police Criminal Investigation Department where they were undergoing interrogation.
The matter, the source revealed, has already been reported to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja and the affected cards already kept aside.
The police were said to be trailing the criminal suspect in Isiala Ngwa South on an entirely different matter when they stumbled on permanent voter’s cards in his house.
As at press time, it was difficult to ascertain the nature of the crime the suspect committed. The police were also said to have brought the PVCs to Abia State headquarters of INEC to confirm if they were genuine PVCs from the commission.
On confirmation that the cards were genuine, INEC then summoned its staff who worked in the local government and queried them over the recovered cards because there was no report of missing PVCs, either through stealing or snatching.
Not satisfied with the explaination, the police arrested six staff of the commission who worked in the area to help them in their investigation.
Meanwhile, The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Adamawa State have raised fears that its supporters are been targeted by gunmen because of their PVCs.
