A pictured handshake between the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari and Iara Oshiomhole, wife of the Edo State Governor, Adam Oshiomhole, sparked mixed reactions on social media last week.
Some Nigerians expressed the belief that, it was wrong for the president-elect to shake the hands of women, but others saw absolutely nothing wrong with the humble act.
PM news reports that, amid this controversy, the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) has urged Buhari to embrace and appoint women in positions of decision making after he assume office on May 29, 2015.
The NWTF, while speaking via its Chief Executive Officer, Ms Ayisha Osori, advised the president-elect to appoint women in his cabinet, noting that it is imperative because the performance of women at the general elections was poor.
Meanwhile, NAN also reported that Osori, on Wednesday in Abuja, stated that it was also necessary for the incoming administration to adopt inclusive representation. She noted that the support for change was required of the middle class in order not to start a revolution in the society
She said, “I am in two minds about this grass root advocacy issue, because for me, all around the world it is the middle class that leads revolutions.
“It is the middle class that drives change; you do not expect the masses who are burgled down with many issues: poverty, looking for food, looking for water, health issues to actually care.
“It is the middle class that is going to drive change because for me, grass root people have proven over and over again that what they care about is food.
“And if a man comes and provides it great, if a woman comes and provide it, I also think for them it’s great, the change we want to see in terms of inclusive representation is going to come from middle class, it is not going to come from grass root.”
Meanwhile, Lord Mandelson, a former UK secretary of state and former commissioner of trade has issued a word of advise to the incoming Buhari-led administration.
