The United States has condemned in strong words the recent Boko Haram attacks on the central market and Barmare residential neighbourhood of Maroua, Cameroon, and the multiple bomb blasts at two bus stations in the northern city of Gombe in Nigeria.
In a press statement released today and signed by Mark Toner, the deputy spokesperson for the US Department of State, the US described the killings and attacks by Boko Haram as ‘horrific and indiscriminate’.
While extending its condolences to the families and loved ones of the soldiers, government officials and civilians killed, the United States reiterated its commitment to finding a lasting solution to Boko Haram.
“Boko Haram’s unconscionable use of children as suicide bombers and indiscriminate targeting of men, women and children highlights the group’s senseless brutality. We remain committed to working closely with Cameroon, Nigeria and the other Lake Chad Basin countries to defeat Boko Haram.”
The United States also praised the security ‘forces of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria for their response to these and other recent callous attacks on innocent civilians.’
In the press release that become available to naij.com via African Press Organization, the US pledged its support to continually provide intelligence, advisors, training, equipment, and logistics on a bilateral basis and through the Multinational Joint Task Force set up by Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin.
‘The United States continues to support the governments and people of the Lake Chad Basin region in their ongoing struggle to degrade and defeat Boko Haram. We support these efforts through a number of security and counterterrorism assistance programs, which provide intelligence, advisors, training, equipment, and logistics. We look forward to expanding this support on a bilateral basis and through the Multinational Joint Task Force, which the Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin are standing up to coordinate the regional efforts to counter Boko Haram.”
President Buhari, who just returned on Thursday from a 4-day official visit to the United States, pleaded with the US government to partner Nigeria in the fight against insurgency.
While in Washington, President Buhari said the US government should help in the provision of intelligence, training and, most especially, equipment needed to continue the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
