The 25-year-old midfielder was unveiled by the club on Wednesday after his free transfer there from Manchester United became official.
Cleverley impressed for Tim Sherwood on loan last season and it was strongly tipped he could stay at Villa Park but he's now revealed why Goodison Park was the more appealing option.
'I'm delighted to be joining because it's a fantastic club,' he told Evertontv. 'There is an all-round package with the history of the club, the great players that are currently here, the manager and the fans. It's definitely the club I wanted to play for.'
When the squad meets next week for pre-season training Cleverley will also reunite with Martinez after playing under the Spaniard on loan at Wigan in 2010-11 as they avoided relegation.
'I think Roberto is a great manager and I'm massively looking forward to working with him again,' Cleverley said. 'We obviously had a year at Wigan together that I really enjoyed. He knows me and he knows how I like to play, so hopefully we can hit it off again come the start of the season.
