Nigeria Stops Thousands On Border From Joining Islamic State

The country’s immigration agency informed that thousands of aspiring terrorists, willing to join the Islamic State, have been prevented from leaving Nigeria.

Boko Haram supports ISIS and that factor attracts recruits from Nigeria into ISIS ranks

Over a period from the beginning of 2014 to March 2015 as many as 24,000 people were stopped from leaving Nigeria, the country’s immigration agency informed.

Many of those stopped are believed to be aspiring terrorists willing to join jihadist movement of the Islamic state and other foreign extremist militant sects. “The terrorist group has a syndicate that arranges travel documents, visas, ticket and money for their recruits,” was said in a statement issued officially be the immigration agency.

Being Africa’s most populous state with high poverty rates, Nigeria represents attractive recruitment base for various extremist movements. That’s why the agency described Nigeria as a “catchment area for recruiters because of the high number of jobless people“.

Many of people stopped at the border during the aforementioned period of time are believed to be the unsuspecting victims of human trafficking rings and are prevented from leaving Nigeria for their own sake. Otherwise they can end up as prostitutes and slaves in Western Europe.

Immigration checks intensified to bar young Nigerians with “doubtful intentions” from leaving the country.

Four days ago two Nigerian students from Delhi were arrested scaled while trying to illegally enter Pakistan from India. There were suggestions that the men had been trying to join ISIS.

International report based on the gathered intelligence added to the growing concerns that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Nigeria’s Boko Haram have established direct links.
