The travails of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state to normalise things seem not to be working out for him as another prominent citizen of the state has submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accusing him of financial recklessness and corruption.
The petition was authored by human rights activist and social crusader, Yinka Odumakin on behalf of a group, Osun stakeholders on Monday, August 10, The Punch reports.
Odumakin, who is an indigene in his petition titled; ‘Petition against Governor Rauf Aregbesola for financial recklessness, corruption, money laundering and fraudulent application of Osun State’s resources,’ stated that the governor has driven the state into abject poverty.
The group called for a forensic audit of the state’s government accounts stating that the decision to write the petition was decided after a resolution reached at its stakeholders’ summit held on July 23, 2015.
He said: “In addition, the state is littered with abandoned projects even though loans were secured by this administration to execute them. Today, our dear state has become the embodiment of lack, poverty, purposelessness, wickedness and insensitivity of political leaders of the highest order in the country.”
The petition further stated that the rein of Aregbesola’s government has made the state the poorest in Nigeria where families who lost their means of livelihood now look up to the EFCC to ensure that the state’s funds were recovered.
Reacting to this current allegation of misappropriation of funds against the governor, the state’s director of research, strategy and publicity of the All Progressives Congress, Kunle Oyatomi said the allegations are baseless and laughable.
He disclosed that the state’s government indebtedness is only N87 billion, insisting that aside that, the state is not owing anyone a dime.
Oyatomi said: “The entire debt of the state government currently stands at N87bn. We took over government in November 2010 and between November and December, we got N5.6bn. In 2011, we got N59.2bn. In 2012, we got N75.6bn. In 2013, we got N104.2bn. In 2014, we got N49bn and so far this year, we got N24bn.
“All these monies were received as federal allocation, from budget augmentation, from the Excess Crude Account and other sources of income. Within these periods, we spent about N196bn on salaries, pensions and other expenditure. So, how have we mismanaged the state?”
He concluded by saying that anyone that is accusing the governor of corruption must be prepared to come forward with evidence.
Meanwhile, Osun state House of Assembly had earlier dismissed an earlier petition against the governor by Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, seeking for his impeachment over allegation of corruption.
