PDP Chieftain In FCT, Others Defect To APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) suffered a heavy loss on Wednesday, August 19, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as over 6,000 of its members defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The decampees were led by a PDP chieftain in the FCT, Yahaya Alhassan Gwagwa, Daily Trust reports.

Gwagwa was a former mandate secretary, area council services secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

In a statement issued by Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, the coordinator of Yahaya Gwagwa Restore AMAC group, Gwagwa said: “Hon. Gwagwa moved from his former party, PDP, to APC to lend his support for the present administration as he finds integrity, honesty and competency on the president.”

He stated that he was ready to work with the APC as he believes they have what it takes to make Nigeria a better place.

Gwagwa therefore, called on his supporters to support APC in the forthcoming area council elections, saying, “Mr. President cannot be a tenant in his land.”

APC executives were said to have received Gwagwa and his supporters at the party’s Gwagwa ward office.

Receiving the defectors, Mohammed Apulu, the Gwagwa Ward chairman promised to borrow some of his experience as an experienced grassroots politician.

There seems to be no end to the defection saga. Members of the PDP have dumping the party in large numbers before and after the 2015 general elections. About a week ago, a former chairman of the PDP in Borno state, Hon. Kolo Bukar and a former minority leader of the House of Representatives (1999-2003), Hon. Mohammed Kumaila defected to the APC, alongside scores of their supporters.
