Tsav, Moro Warn Buhari To Stay Away From Tribunals

Following the many cases before the election tribunal across the country, former Lagos state police boss, Abubakar Tsav, and the immediate past minister of interior, Abba Moro, have warned President Muhammadu Buhari sternly not to interfere in the ongoing litigations of the 2015 general elections.

They said if the president does anything to impede the justice system, the action may cast aspersions on his person.

According to Daily Independent, the duo cautioned that any attempt by the All Progressives Congress to influence proceedings would heat up the polity and ridicule the country before the international community.

They pointed that President Buhari’s corruption drive would also be questioned if there is happens to be any development as to stepping in against the legal proceedings.

They made the statements from the perception that the President may be inclined to favour members of the APC above members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party and other political parties at the tribunals.

Tsav and Moro were also reacting to recent reports that president Buhari had set up a 10 man committee to help salvage the electoral fortunes of APC members where their elections may be threatened.

On the one hand, Tsav said: “If the President wants to maintain his hard earned reputation, good name and high integrity, he should not interfere in what is happening at the Benue and other tribunals but rather allow justice to take its course in the interest of our growing democracy.”

He was also of the view that, “Our people can only learn if justice is allowed to take its course; Muhammadu Buhari is the President of Nigeria and not that of the APC and must therefore remain neutral and impartial.”

On another hand, Moro added that: “there is this fear, really, that Mr. President was likely going to use his position and good office to persuade the tribunal to give judgement in favour of Governor Samuel Ortom in Benue state and in other parts of the country.”

“That will be very very unfortunate for obvious reasons; the president has come out very openly to say that he is going to be the president of all Nigerians and that he would fight corruption headlong, and all of us believe in him because of his antecedents.”

Moro added that it would be wise as a patriotic Nigerian to advise the president not to go all the way to in influence the activities of the tribunals, not just in Benue but across the country. He stressed that if the president does so, it would send a wrong signal to the world as to his preparedness to fight corruption.

The former minister concluded by saying that such a move would be a draw back on the nation’s fledgling democracy and democratic process where justice cannot be obtained, when obvious acts of undemocratic practices characterize even the nomination of candidates to run elections.

Meanwhile, the request put forward to the Rivers state governorship election petitions tribunal by the APC and Dakuku Peterside, to transfer all the election materials for inspection has been declined today, August 19.
