Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State yesterday approved the payment of N133 million hospital bill for 300 patients and victims of Boko Haram attacks whose conditions require medical treatment outside the state.

This was contained a statement signed by the governor’s spokesman, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego in  Damaturu, the state capital.

Bego said: “this is part of ongoing effort to provide succour to the less privileged as an interim measure, as government works to re-position the state’s health sector through massive renovation of hospitals and provision of equipment and drugs.”

He said that some of the conditions/procedures for which the patients were supported by the government on the recommendations of the state medical board, include kidney transplant, open heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, spinal cord surgery, knee and hip replacement therapy, and several orthopedic and ophthalmology cases referred to hospitals within the country like the Dala Orthopedic Hospital Kano, National Eye Centre Kaduna among others in India and Egypt.

Among the 300 patients were 18 expected to under-go knee and hip replacement therapy and other orthopedic procedures to treat gunshot wounds sustained in various attacks by criminals and insurgents.

The number also include less privileged patients with chronic conditions such as advanced diabetics and liver diseases who require regular medications but are not in a position to provide on their own, hence, the governor approved the release of the funds to support them on humanitarian grounds.

Bego added that the state government was committed to improving the health sector with ongoing renovation and upgrading of medical facilities across the state, pointing out that, already, renovation work on the General Hospitals in Buni Yadi, Damaturu and Damagum had reached advanced stages.

Bego therefore asked patients who applied for special support because their medical conditions demanded for it to check from time to time with the state medical board, office of the Head of Service or the Ministry for local government headquarters to track the progress of their applications.
