The All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally shut its doors against members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who have the intention of defecting.
According to the APC, the era of defection of PDP members to the APC has ended as the party will not accept them again.
This was disclosed via a statement released by the APC national publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed on April 22, Wednesday, in Abuja, The Punch reports.
Mohammed urged leaders and members of the PDP to remain in their party and rebuild it to play their new role as the main opposition party.
The APC also observed that the outgoing ruling party was yet to understand the enormity of the challenges awaiting it as an opposition party.
The statement reads: “PDP leaders and members are falling over themselves shamelessly and swearing undying allegiance to the APC.
“Well, in case they did not get the message of the President-elect and our National Chairman, we want to repeat it in very blunt terms: PDP leaders and members, you are not welcome in APC.
“Please stay in your party, but if – as we suspect – you cannot survive in opposition, then, take a walk, quit politics.”
There has been a huge number of PDP supporters defecting to the APC over the past three months.
The APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, had earlier spoken about the recent wave of defections of politicians from the PDP to the APC, saying it was not good for Nigeria’s political development.
Also speaking on the issue, the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, said the APC has nothing to fear over the mass defection into the party. According to him, the PDP chieftains would have very little influence in the APC government.
