Nebo Tasks Buhari On Power Sector

Despite fuel crisis, that crippling Nigeria for more than a month, the minister of power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has said that the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan fulfilled power promises.

He insisted that the situation could get better in the near future if the new administration would tackle the issues of pipeline vandalism and adopt renewable energy to generate more power.

During the 2011 presidential campaigns, Jonathan made a flock of promises, comprising provision of steady power supply, increasing the hope of Nigerians, who have for years been groping in darkness.

The minister of power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said the authorities had done well for the sector but for a few lapses.

Jonathan administration has opened up the sector with the unbundled of its stakes in the Power Holding Company of Nigeria in 2013 to let private sector participation.

The outgoing government has asked the incoming administration, taking over on May 29, to treat the power challenge, with focus on pipeline vandalism.

The drop in generation in the last few months, had affected most businesses in Nigeria which trust hugely on electricity generating sets for power.

However, the government authorities have accused Nigeria’s electricity power crisis of further deteriorating in recent times on sabotage and deficient gas to run the country’s power plants.

Nigeria’s severe fuel scarcity caused widespread disruption to everyday services, with the telecommunications and banking sectors the latest hit hard by the worsening crisis.

The country produces about two million barrels of crude oil a day but despite its huge reserves, it imports much of its fuel due to a lack of refining capability – a situation blamed on corruption and mismanagement.
