The meeting between Senate President Bukola Saraki, John Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was cancelled.
Bamikole Omishore, Saraki’s media assistant, issued a comment:
“His Excellency, Distinguished Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, will be at APC party secretariat at 12:45 to meet chairman and NWC. Press, please take note.”
But a few minutes later, he sends another comment, brief this time:
“Apologies, meeting has been cancelled.”
Omishore did not name any reason for the termination of the meeting.
It should be noted that Saraki became Senate President after his opponent and APC’s approved aspirant for the position, Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), and his supporters missed the inauguration of the 8th Senate on June 9, Tuesday.
While he would have won if the missed senators were in attendance, owing to the massive support he received from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators, Saraki has rejected that he has any plan to defect from the ruling party, defining the suggestion of that as “absurd and laughable.”
The APC defined this election as “unacceptable” and vowed to sanction members who disobeyed its directives.
Senate President also repeated his commitment to APC, saying “he remains a loyal party member and a leader of the party, committed to contributing his quota to building the party and helping it to deliver its promise of change to Nigerian people”.
However, President Buhari while reacting to the development had said that he did not have any preferred candidate for the Senate and the House of Representatives.
