Yakubu Dogara, the newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives has written to President Muhammadu Buhari.
He wrote to inform the president of his emergence as the Speaker and Olasunkanmi Sulaiman as the Deputy Speaker, The Nation reports.
Dogara also officially notified the Senate President, Bukola Saraki of the development.
The letter was read on the floor of the House in its first sitting on June 10, Wednesday.
According to Dogara’s letter, the emergence of the two House leaders followed the assembly of a quorum of the House that elected them.
In the letter, the clerk of the National Assembly was directed to notify Buhari through the Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF) that, having assembled and properly constituted, the House is ready to receive any message he may wish to transmit.
The 8th House which sat for the first time yesterday, debated a motion by Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and it was unanimously supported and passed.
There was no selection of principal officers of the House, however, the Speaker told members of the provisions of the standing rules of the House on the selection and composition of principal officers and Standing Committees.
According to him, the Speaker would chair the principal officers and the selection committee which would be compared soon.
Plenary was adjourned to 23 June, 2015.
The House of Representatives had elected Dogara as the new Speaker on June 9, Tuesday. He scored 182 votes to beat his closest rival Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos). Yusuf Suleiman was elected as his deputy.
While receiving former leadership of the House in his office on June 10, Wednesday, Dogara, had pledged to work on delivering the electoral promises given by the All Progressives Congress.
