Principal Officers: Dogara Set To Compensate Igbo Lawmakers

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, has assured the South east region that they will be adequately compensated in the leadership structure in the lower house.

Thisday reports that, as presently constituted, the South-east is not represented in the leadership structure of the house, and the development have sparked protests from house members from the South East who are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the APC House Caucus on Wednesday night, Dogara said all the crises in the lower chamber had been resolved and the House was now prepared to focus on its core duties.

“There are no more factions in the House as what we have today is a group of lawmakers loyal to the House leadership and our great party.

“It is only in unity that we can positively contribute to the change we all worked for and move Nigeria forward towards our desired dream of a greater nation,” Dogara said.

In a similar vein, Majority Leader of the House,  Femi Gbajabiamila said, “There are no longer factions in the House, whatever happened earlier is now behind us and we are ready to serve Nigerians to the best of our ability.”

Gbajabiamila also disclosed that the South east would be compensated, saying, “it is not right to play the ethnicity or regional card for now but they will be adequately compensated,” he concluded.

Dogara was elected Speaker of the House of Reps on June 9 against the wishes of his party. He polled 182 votes to defeat Gbajabiamila, who had 174 votes.
