The 8th Assembly Has A Few Distractions – Dogara

Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, stated  that the house has been distracted in the past weeks and it is time for the federal lawmakers to settle down to work as elected representatives of the people, Leadership informs.

The speaker said  this yesterday in Abuja, while inaugurating a 21-member Committee to Review Existing Laws and Law Reform.

Dogara said: “The 8th Assembly has had a few distractions, but it is time to get onto the job for which we were elected. Apart from reviewing existing laws, law reform involves introduction of new laws where necessary. Laws that aid the anti-corruption struggle, infrastructure renewal, efficient and optimal utilisation of our petroleum resources, solid minerals, education and social services, agriculture, diversification of our economy and massive employment of our teeming youthful population should engage our undivided attention as a parliament”.

He noted that the problem has always been that of weak implementation of reports and recommendations, revealing that many legislative proposals normally end up on the table of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) without seeing the light of the day.

Yakubu Dogara added that the major reason that informed the setting up of the committee was the urgent need to review the various laws in the Statute books which have become outdated.
